Okay, my first swing at this prompt devlolved into a screed about not letting your ideal writing conditions become an excuse for not writing, and I need to revisit and refine that post a bit, but also I recognize that I didn’t answer the question, really. I just did the edgy thing of rejecting it… though I do sincerely believe that many of our creature comforts pose a risk of becoming blockages or excuses.
But, to actually speak to the type of space I could potentially call perfect:
The room should have natural light and a view that I can enjoy or ignore.
I want books for reference or inspiration, as well as aesthetics.
I need multiple pieces of furniture, because as a confirmed bisexual, I simply cannot sit normally in a chair. Ideally, there will be space to sit two different ways, (an office chair and an arm chair, perhaps) and there would be a bed or couch or chaise lounge thingy for laying.
I want a desk to hold a monitor and keyboard and also to hold paper and pen. Plus ideally a smaller table or lapdesk for moving away from the big desk.
An incense burner would be nice.
Music needs to be available through the electronics, or perhaps a vinyl turntable, but I’m not too set on NEEDING music the way some are. And it is not consistent for me – I want different stimuli at different times.
I want to have a computer with lots of screen acreage, so that I can write in one window while having something else visible, if I want. Sometimes I cannot be trusted with the internet when I’m supposed to be writing, but also sometimes I need to research or want background audio/video.
I prefer loud clacky mechanical keyboards.
I used to write a lot in ugly block letter longhand, but I was never very fast… and these days, my right (dominant) hand is a weak point. It is less dexterous and has no endurance anymore. I want to have a journal and options for paper writing, but to get actual work done I do need a keyboard.
I wrote on the Freewrite a lot in November, and that worked pretty well because it did what it promised – removed internet distractions – but I do eventually need to proofread and edit, too.
Ideally, my writing space would have a view outside and I would notionally feel the occasional urge to go outdoors with my notebook or portable things.
I think that covers it. What did I miss? Snacks and drinks readily available but not actually in/at the writing space, otherwise I’ll mindlessly munch. Anything else?
